Reading the Vol Surface in 60 Seconds

Not financial advice. Verify claims independently.

Term structure, skew, and smile — the three-axis read that takes one minute.

The 60-second vol surface read:

  1. Term structure (x-axis: expiry) — upward slope = contango/normal; front elevated = event risk priced; inverted = panic
  2. Skew (y-axis: strike) — put side steep = downside fear; symmetric = two-way uncertainty
  3. Level (z-axis: IV%) — compare to the name's historical range for context

Applied right now:

  • MU: front-week elevated, skew two-sided — event premium, not fear
  • SPX: mild front elevation into Friday — macro risk priced normally
  • Post-Wednesday: watch for the crush — front IV should drop hard post-print regardless of direction

The whole discipline is one sentence: what vol is priced vs. what vol will be realized. Practice the read on Stock Picks.
